An attractive woman in her mid-60s, Julie told me about her three failed marriages while we sipped hot chocolate on a wintery afternoon. The details of the first two are not important to this story.

Her third husband, Doug, was a real “lady-killer.”

When they married she had no idea he might be a cold-blooded gold digger who would  murder her for money.

Fifteen years ago when her only daughter was grown, Julie moved across the country to San Diego. You may know someone like her who made a gutsy life change and relocated —alone — to a new place where no job, family, or friends awaited.

Julie used the online dating services and stumbled upon Doug, who was eight years her junior. They were platonic friends for about a year while he acted as her local guide to Southern California. “Doug played it well,” Julie told me. “He showed me the cities and local neighborhoods, but he maintained the boundaries of our friendship.”

Common interests

Sculpture was Julie’s hobby. By coincidence (or so it seemed), Doug said he always wanted to be an artist. He asked her to teach him the advanced skills. On the weekends at her apartment, they worked on crafting scrap metal into abstract modern pieces. Later she realized that Doug had no genuine interest in sculpture or even art. “That’s what pulled us together,” she explained to me several times. “He told me I was helping him fulfill his lifetime dream.”

Early signs of money troubles

Doug invited Julie to spend a weekend away at a local winery. It wasn’t an extravagant trip and he paid for all their expenses. However, on the drive back to San Diego, he asked her to pay half. She wasn’t willing; she told him flatly that he invited her so he should pick up the whole tab.

“I suppose I should have seen this warning sign that he kept track and expected me to split all the costs,” she told me. “His behavior was a sign of his not being straight with me about money.”
